- Description
- Teacher education has been subject to many reform efforts over the past half-century, usually focusing on recruiting better qualified students onto teacher training courses, increasing the length of those courses and enhancing their academic rigour. This has often involved greater standardization and regulation of provision. Recently, England has pioneered a rather different approach, involving deregulation and marketization of the system. This has led to the opening up of a variety of new routes into teaching. This chapter explores how far this trend has gone, what it has entailed and the extent to which it is being taken up in other jurisdictions. It suggests that there may be some positive aspects to this development, but argues that there is an urgent need for more research into the impact and implications of having multiple routes into the teaching profession.
